The third round of MiLC 2025 capitalized on the flow from Round 2 by providing us ample dose of quality cricket including two centuries, a fifer, a Super Over and a couple of hard-fought last-ball victories.
With Round 4 underway, we take a look at the top performers and moments in Round 3 that set the stage for the crucial next phases of the tournament.
Top Performers
While there were familiar consistent performers who continued to impress, there were others who took the opportunity to express their talent. The following is a division-wise look at the players who shaped Round 3 with their contributions:
Eastern Division
- Kennar Kevon Lewis (New Jersey Somerset Cavaliers): The Cavaliers’ opener was instrumental in their wins scoring two half-centuries in the third Round. While he came all guns blazing against New England Eagles smashing 6 sixes and 3 fours in his 45-ball 73, his match-winning half-century against The Philadelphians (50 off 52) was more restrained showing his adaptability and range as a reliable batter at the top.
- Najaf Shah (New Jersey Somerset Cavaliers): While Kevon Lewis gave them a good start with the bat, it was the medium pace of Cavaliers’ tall skipper Najaf Shah that complemented it with ball in hand. Shah took two three-wicket hauls in the round at a miserly economy rate to help his team maintain the winning streak.
Southern Division
- Kunwarjeet Singh (Baltimore Royals): Arguably the most consistent batter of Round 3, Singh’s dominant batting at the top was instrumental to the Royals’ success. The opener scored two half-centuries, including a match-winning 81 off 51 against Orlando Galaxy. In the next game, he set the tone for the Royals’ monumental total of 237/3 against the Fort Lauderdale Lions with 75 off 45 balls opening the innings.
- Tagenarine Chanderpaul (Orlando Galaxy): The leading run-scorer so far in the Southern Division, Chanderpaul was Orlando’s pick of the players, hitting two half-centuries in the third Round, including a match-winning 50 against Morrisville Raptors after taking three wickets earlier proving he can also be handy with the ball.
- Agni Chopra (Baltimore Royals): A powerful striker of the ball, Chopra has made a strong impression as an exciting finisher for the Baltimore Royals. Batting at Number 5, the big-hitter smashed the Fort Lauderdale Lions’ bowling attack to all parts on two separate occasions, scoring brisk knocks of 42 off 22 and 39 off 19 respectively.
Western Division
- Sujit Nayak (Seattle Thunderbolts): One of the standout performers for the Thunderbolts in the third round, After a brilliant 11/1 off 4 overs against East Bay Blazers in the Thunderbolts’ home game, Nayak’s all-round skills came to the fore when the Thunderbolts beat the Blazers again the next day in a thrilling contest decided in the super over. After scoring 27(32) on a low-scoring pitch, the all-rounder took three wickets, including two wickets in his final over to stall an otherwise smooth chase from East Bay Blazer and took the contest to the Super Over.
- Shehan Fernando (San Diego Surf Riders): Having already impressed everyone at the start of the season, Shehan Fernando found his form again in the third round against Los Angeles Lashings. After the Surf Riders lost their home game on Saturday to the Lashings despite Fernando’s exceptional knock of 72 off 43 deliveries, the opener came back with another half-century the next day against the latter to help get a good foundation for his team in what turned out to be a thrilling contest that went down to the wire.
- Matt Hennig (Seattle Thunderbolts): While it was Sujit Nayak who opened the door for the Thunderbolts against East Bay Blazers, it was Matt Hennig’s double-wicket over that effectively crippled the Blazers enough to take the match to the Super Over. Carrying his bowling momentum over, Hennig gave away only 8 runs in the Super Over to set up a memorable victory for Seattle Thunderbolts. At the end of Round 3, Hennig trails only Shadley Van Schalkwyk (21 wickets) in the bowlers’ leaderboard with 18 wickets to his name so far in the competition in 10 games.
- Yousuf Zazai (Silicon Valley Strikers): A wicket-taking bowler, Zazai gave a match-winning performance against Seattle Thunderbolts on Saturday, bowling two double-wicket overs, including one where he sent Thunderbolts’ strong hitters Sujit Nayak and Shadley Van Schalkwyk back to the pavilion.
Central Division
- Corey Anderson (Kings XI Dallas): Anderson was in his vintage groove at Moosa Stadium as he smashed the third century of this season off just 48 deliveries. The veteran left-hander remained unbeaten smashing 10 sixes and 4 fours in a brutal display of power-hitting as he took the attack on Lone Star Athletics’ bowlers who were helpless against his onslaught.
- Nauman Anwar ( St. Louis Americans): Anwar scored the second century of the third round against Chicago Tigers, smashing a boundary-laden innings of 117 off just 63 deliveries that included 8 maximums and 9 fours. His brutal assault meant the St.Louis Americans posted a challenging total of 198/4 on the board, which would have been enough had it not been for the last-ball heroics from Tigers’ Rahul Basu.
- Rahul Basu (Chicago Tigers): Basu’s finishing act of 43 off 26 deliveries sealed the victory in an amazing fashion for the Chicago Tigers against Saint Louis Americans. The right-hander helped the Tigers chase a challenging 14 off the final over by scoring the 4 runs needed off the final delivery with a boundary against Abhimanyu Lamba.
- Hasan Mohsin (Chicago Kingsmen): The only fifer of the third round, Hasan Mohsin’s vital spell was instrumental in Chicago Kingsmen’s 65-run rout of Michigan Cricket Stars on Sunday.
Moments Beyond Scoreboard
As players across all divisions continued to shine with performances, there were many moments that shaped up the narrative in the competition beyond stats. Here are a few of them that stood out:
Sarbjeet Ladda’s Historic Milestone (Baltimore Royals)
An MiLC regular since the first season, Baltimore Royals’ veteran leg-spinner registered a unique record to his name becoming the first bowler to take 100 wickets in the league’s history. Ladda achieved the feat in his 53rd match across five seasons. Acknowledging the achievement, Ladda said the milestone means a lot to him and called his MiLC journey a phenomenal one.
Last-Ball Thrillers
Reflecting the quality and increasing intensity of the competition across divisions, there were two games in the third round on Sunday that were decided off the very last deliveries:
- Los Angeles Lashings vs San Diego Surf Riders (Western Division): Needing 5 runs off the final over, The Surf Riders were on the brink of losing the contest when Lashings’ Akmal Hajizada took two wickets in the final over. However Sabrish Prasad hit a maximum off the only delivery he faced to hand his team a memorable win.
- Chicago Tigers vs St.Louis Americans (Central Division): Chicago Tigers needed 14 off the final over and later 4 off the final delivery to edge past. Rahul Basu’s last-ball boundary sealed the victory in style proving again that in T20 cricket, it’s not over until it’s really over.
Matt Hennig, Sujit Nayak Set up Super Over Win (Seattle Thunderbolts vs East Bay Blazers)
Just when we thought MiLC 2025 produced many super overs, Round 3 upped the ante with another Super Over thriller. Sujit Nayak and Matt Hennig took three-wicket hauls each defending a below-par 128 against a strong Blazers batting line-up. Hennig went a notch further by giving away only 8 runs in the super over to set up a memorable victory for the Thunderbolts in Tollgate Farms.
Season Enters Crucial Stage
Round 3 proved that the quality of cricket on display in MiLC is only getting better with memorable performances and nail-biting finishes decided by the barest of margins. Going into Round 4, the teams will seek to position themselves at the best possible scenario to be in contention for the playoffs race, which means we can definitely expect more hard-fought contests and exceptional performances across divisions.
